Seniors derive enormous benefit from connections with young people

Fostering Intergenerational Learning

Gazette.net writes about the 20th anniversary of Interages, a Maryland-based nonprofit that connects older volunteers to school aged children as mentors, but also as friends. The connections are mutually benefitial and the program has been a rousing success with over 200 seniors already signed up and volunteering.

‘‘Seniors derive enormous benefit from connections with young people. They bring experience and wisdom, but they can also learn from the younger generation,” Heyman said. ‘‘Both generations are giving and receiving. I saw that happening and the need is only growing.”
